Thumbnail image for insomnia.jpgMany people suffer from insomnia; there are a variety of things that can cause you to be wide-awake at 3am. Here are a few common things that you may not have guessed were the culprits keeping you up when you need to be asleep!

Alcohol
If you thought a few glasses of wine would be a sleep aid, think again. Drinking two glasses or more of alcohol up to an hour before bedtime can suppress your REM time.

Heavy meals
Eat light at night. Heavy meals may make you drowsy temporarily, but not long enough to help you sleep. Try to eat lean protein and veggies a few hours before you hit the hay and you’ll notice the difference of going to bed when you are not overly full.

No bedtime snack
While you should still watch your calorie intake, a small high-carb bedtime snack such as fruit, crackers, or toast, release serotonin into the bloodstream which is a sleep aid.

Spicy food
Meals with chilies, garlic, and other spicy ingredients are best eaten earlier in the day. At night, they can interrupt your REM sleep.

Your body is not tired
You need more exercise! Even if your mind is sleepy, your body may not be getting enough physical activity to feel tired. So get out there and exercise for a week and then see if you sleep better.

Sweet dreams!
