Working Fort Lauderdale

"I caught my first tube today... Sir"
-Johnny Utah, Point Break

Goodness Gracious, Fort Lauderdale was a learning experience. While the weather in New York was fairly mild for this time of year, the blast of humidity and the smell of sun block stepping out of Fort Lauderdale airport was a welcome change. The plane ride from New York to Fort Lauderdale was much better than we thought it was going to be, so we were in top spirits by the time we landed. We made our way to the hotel and saddled up to something called the internet to find out what ridiculous activity people voted for us to do in this respectable beach community. Surely people would not be interested in watching a couple of gentlemen like Tyler and I do anything that could in any way harm our white tuxedo gear. Surely people would be able to guess that our combined "beach skill" would be about as high as the Chicago Bears chances of winning the Super Bowl next year. Surely...forget it. You voted for us to go Tuxedo Surfing, so Tuxedo Surfing it was.

People might deduce that I carry around my surfboard with me at all times (from the cut surfer abs, the bronze skin tone, and the frosted tips), but no, you would be incorrect. We only had a couple of hours before it got dark, so Tyler and I found the closest professional surf shop within walking distance. It was called Walgreens, and apparently they won't be supplying the 2008 ISA World Surfing Competition with boards this year. Anyway, we picked up the materials we thought we would need (cabana hats, Brad Pitt wrap around sunglasses, and the closest thing we could find to a surfboard), and headed out to the break. Despite many long minutes of practicing the "pop" necessary to master a wave, I'm not sure either of us picked up the skills necessary to correctly shred. As Tyler put it, I "looked like a wounded flounder", and he looked more out of his element than a pro arm-wrestler trying out for "The Nutcracker" on ice. Anyway, despite hilariously small waves, we got tossed around pretty badly and spent the next couple hours recovering before our flight to Boston. Check it out
