Apples

Apple picking has to be one of my favorite fall activities, there is nothing quite like biting into a freshly picked, crisp apple. Now that the fall season has arrived, it’s the best time to enjoy apples while they are at the peak of their season.
Did you know that Red Delicious apples are only eaten raw and Rome Beauty apples are best for baking? There are many varieties of apples, ranging in flavor as well as color. How you plan to use them (raw, cooked or baked) will in part determine which variety you choose. Braeburn, Cortland, Fuji, Gala, Golden Delicious, Granny Smith, Jonathan and McIntosh are considered “all-purpose” apples and are great raw or cooked.
No matter what the variety, you want to choose apples that are firm and don’t show any bruising. If you don’t plan to eat your apples right away, you can actually store them for up to 6 weeks if placed in a plastic bag and refrigerated. A great way to use your freshly picked apples is to incorporate them into a salad. This Spinach Salad with Apples and Pomegranate Seeds is one idea you could try with your apples. The natural sweetness of the apples pairs nicely with the creamy KRAFT FREE Honey Dijon Dressing.
