As everyone waits for The Dark Knight to open this weekend, Mamma Mia! is posed to debut at a very solid #2.  The Abba-inspired musical premiered internationally over the weekend and did gangbuster business, making over $24 million.

In the UK, the Meryl Streep film opened at #1, making $13.2M, which is the 4th highest Universal Studio debut ever in England.  (Behind only Bridget Jones 2, Mr. Bean’s Holiday and King Kong. )

While many expect The Dark Knight to rake in $130M+ this upcoming weekend, Mamma Mia! could generate as much as $30M as solid counter-programming.

And it certainly doesn’t hurt having Tom Hanks as a producer.  Legend has it that wife Rita Wilson dragged the two-time Oscar winner to the play back in 1999.  The superstar couple were so taken by the spectacle, thye quickly snagged the film rights.  Smart move as the show as been seen by over 30 million people since it was first introduced in London almost a decade ago.
