Does The South Beach Diet Work?
Posted on 15 July 2008 by Sharifa
If you look online there are plenty of people who will tell you it does. My aunt has managed to lose over 50 lbs and keep it off for years with the diet. Even my 70+year old grandmother swears by it. Since being in my current relationship I have gained a whopping 20 lbs. I blame my BF for dragging me to late night dinners and my job for keeping me tethered to my desk 40+ hours a week. The first few lbs. or so were fine, because I actually carry my extra weight in my chest, now the excess poundage is starting to settle in my mid section. Long gone are the days of my 4 pack, and it makes me so sad. After becoming officially sick of looking at my fat ass in the mirror, I’ve decided it’s time to become committed to dropping this weight before it starts making itself at home. So, I am employing the use of cardiologist Arthur Agatston’s obscenely popular “diet,” to aid in my weight loss.
Right now I am in Phase 1 of the diet and want to pull my hair out. Phase 1 is definitely the strictest phase of the diet, requiring you to cut out everything except lean protein, dairy, and veggies. You have to check the label of everything you put in your mouth to make sure there is no sugar. This is what makes this phase so hard. You wouldn’t believe how much sugar you secretly eat. It’s in salad dressing, salsa, chips, even fruit…seriously we eat an obscene amount of sugar on a daily basis. Once the sugar is cut out, the body stops craving it and makes the rest of phase 1 ok to get through. I figure by tomorrow, I will have finished my sugar withdrawal.
What I love about the diet, however, is that I get to eat food. I eat 5-6 times a day until I feel full. And since I love veggies and fish, I’m in heaven. But it also requires that I take the time to plan and prepare my meals. Which if I did more of that in the first place, I probably wouldn’t be in this boat. If you are looking for a real change in how you approach food and weight loss this may very well be the diet for you.
