EAT Diner- North Hollywood
Posted on 11 July 2008 by joy
EAT on Magnolia Blvd in North Hollywood isn’t the most glamorous of locations, but what it lacks in glamour it makes up for in…. zucchini? Let me explain.
EAT is located where Ned’s Diner used to be. The set up is the same- small counter top that overlooks some hardworking short order cooks and a grill, about 7 indoor tables and a small patio with 3 outdoor tables. The decor consists of a handful of framed posters (literally), a strangely elaborate ceiling, colorful plates and the usual diner table necessities: ketchup, hot sauce, cream, shakers and a sugar dispenser. In a place the completely lacks decor, somehow the table settings become part of the decoration. Maybe I’m just reaching…
EAT serves breakfast and lunch. I’d say breakfast is your best bet. French toast is pretty mediocre. It feels a lot like Denny’s except it wasn’t two in the morning and I wasn’t drunk, so it didn’t taste as good. Eggs are good. Yes to the eggs. Try to Huevos del Sur which is eggs served over black beans with a slightly spicy tomatillo sauce and grilled onions. It’s served with warm corn tortillas. Winner.
The Shredders are the house specialty. Shredders are grated zucchini in the style of hash browns. They get beautifully browned and crispy and are great with hot sauce.
The service screams independent diner, for better or worse. My server on this particular day, while friendly, capable and chatty was wearing an overtly phallic necklace. It wasn’t abstract. I’m not kidding. Could I make this stuff up? Don’t make eye to necklace contact unless you’ve had your coffee and you’re well prepared for that sort of thing. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.
EAT is good. Not great. Not over the top. It’s a good place to go when you simply need to be set straight with eggs and strong coffee.
