Jalapenos and Cilantro Tagged in the Ongoing Salmonella Outbreak
Posted on 11 July 2008 by joy
It looks like salsa and guacamole are off limits this summer season.
Jalapenos and cilantro are the latest produce items to fall under the speculation of salmonella. Since April, some 1,000 have been sickened by fresh tomatoes, and now we can add cilantro and jalapenos to the list. The two new additions to the list have sickened 400 people in Texas, and near 100 people in New Mexico.
All of the cilantro and jalapeno salmonella cases have been linked by their genetic strain, and has recently been dubbed Salmonella St. Paul.
The outbreak continues since its point of origin has not yet been located. The FDA is now checking imported produce upon entrance, and working hard to find the culprit here in the states. Possible culprits include a common packing or shipping site or a contaminated water supply.
