McDonald’s Going After Starbucks Snobs
Posted on 06 October 2008 by joy
Did Starbucks really make coffee snobby? Ok, they did make up a whole other language just to order coffee. A grande half caf skinny mocha is actually a special code for a glorious cup of coffee. And yes, where complex coffee code failed Starbucks, they simply made up words like ‘frappuccino’. Is this snobby or just plain ridiculous?
McDonald’s would have you think that coffee giants like Starbucks are too snooty for their own good. McDonald’s has launched an all out attack on the coffee giant. McDonald’s now serves espresso drinks, so when you order those two Sausage McMuffin Sandwiches you can also grab your morning latte.
McDonald’s, however, has gone out of their way to separate themselves from their competitors. McDonald’s boasts about their reasonable prices and unsnobby approach to coffee. They even have a totally lame web site to advertise just how down to earth they are about coffee- unsnobbycoffee.com.
At unsnobbycoffee.com you can… lets see…. play a pin ball game (why!?) and write a Mad Libs style letter to a coffee snob convincing them to try McDonald’s lattes rather than their snobby coffee competitor. Consider it an intervention. The entire campaign is underwhelming at best. It would seem that since McDonald’s can’t actually be better than Starbucks they have to do what they can to tear them down. Two words: that’s lame.

Hmmm…that sounds like recent political schemes as well…words to think about.
