Mamma Mia! has become the surprise blockbuster of the summer. So far, the movie musical has raked in over $281M worldwide and it’s still going strong. To put this number in perspective, the Meryl Streep starrer only cost $52M to make.
And now comes word that the soundtrack, featuring the voices of Streep, Bronson, Firth & others, has landed at #1 after 5 weeks of release. The all-Abba score hit the top spots on the nation’s album chart, selling 130,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan. It had been locked in at No. 3 for three weeks. Its cume is now 576,000.
Abba’s Gold a collective of the Swedish quartet’s hits, sold 33,000 copies, making it the nation’s top seller among catalog items.
Mamma Mia! swapped positions with Sugarland’s Love on the Inside, which took a 47% sales hit in its second week, selling 91,000.
The top debut came from R&B singer Lloyd, whose third album Lessons In Love sold 51,000 to open at No. 7. The solo debut of country singer Heidi Newfield, “What Am I Waiting For” (Curb), sold 34,000 to saddle up at No. 10.
So does this millions of people all over the world are driving in their cars, singing along to Christine Baranski’s version of S.O.S.? I guess so…
