MGS4: Guns of the Patriots bringin’ the ’stache back

As we creep closer to MGS4’s release date of June 12th, I find myself wondering if this truly is the end of the Metal Gear Solid era. The series has been around since before my first memory, but I do remember the first time I discovered Hideo Kojima’s long lasting (if not ongoing) masterpiece.
I was beaming as I played my Playstation for the first time after a christmas back when I was no older than 12 years old, the first game I got was Crash Bandicoot and I felt I needed a break. The problem was the only other disc I had was a Playstation Demo disc but I thought I’d pop it in and see what it had to offer. I found a minor amount of fun playing a demo that involved getting rid of blocks as other blocks rushed towards you in a what I can only describe as a chess game/survival horror, then I tripped over a game called Metal Gear Solid which promised Tactical Espionage Action….
Just what I was looking for: Sweet, sweet Tactical Espionage Action.
As I started playing the game I quickly discovered that me running around like a chicken with no head didn’t work against all of the guards I came across (who by the way had both heads and guns). Question marks and exclamation points cleverly placed at halo level abounded and I must have died the first 15 times I played. Eventually, after beating the demo 100 times, I convinced my parents to buy the game at a discounted rate of 1 lawn mow a week. I learned how to sneak, use stealth and I actually looked up the word Espionage. The idea of one man infiltrating a dangerous area to take out a whole fleet of soldiers, guards and major league bosses was amazing.
Now, a decade later I stand in awe at what the Metal Gear series has
produced. The gameplay has matured with each game and always brought
something new while still holding on to the best (and at times
extremely annoying and difficult) attributes of the original.
So
when Metal Gear Sold 4: Guns of the Patriots hits your hot little hand
remember, you may be entering the end of a dynasty: break some necks,
shake down some dog tags and remember: there’s always an exit.

Great article. Hilarious… yet sobering. (Hey, it’s Friday.)
MGS has always been one of my favorite series. Unless you were a Nazi playing Wolfenstein 3D, it was the first time we were introduced to stealth gameplay. I guess most of my firsts have been memorable: Dragon Warrior (RPG), Pong (Sports) Jessica Ferguson (3rd Grade)… the list goes on.
Kojima said he was disappointed with MGS4 in a recent interview, which worries me, but what does he know? People are always they’re own worst critics. I do things all the time that I’m not satisfied with but others are. (read: sexual performance)
Anyway, just wanted to give props where they’re due. Great article. Now, back to my rum.

PS – The chess/survival horror game is called I.Q. (Intelligent Qube). I had the same demo disc.
