Rock Sugar is the newest grandiose restaurant concept from The Cheesecake Factory. Rock Sugar, Pan Asian Kitchen, is located between the beach and Beverly Hills in the Century City mall. The area has had a resurgence in recent years with the relocation of the Creative Artists Agency into the neighborhood. Recently, celebrity chef Tom Collichio has opened an impressive restaurant Craft, setting a tone for good food in the neighborhood.

Rock Sugar is the hugely impressive space, if not just a bit overdone. But every detail is considered, from the well placed flatware to the patio- heated from the ground up. Walk through the huge, beautifully crafted doors into a outdoor lounge area softened by gorgeous hanging paper lanterns. The bar has a beautiful golden glow, and the dining room literally seems endless. Some of the highlights of the dining room are the private booths with soft lighting and colorful drapes, and there’s an outdoor private room for parties. The outdoor seating is incredible! The patio is heated from the floor up. No more fighting over heat lamps with the table next to you on a chilly night.

The food is an array of Thai, Vietnamese, Malaysian, Indonesian and East Indian. Above are the lacquered ribs, an amazing appetizer. The only problem with the huge array of food, served family style, is that if you order various items from the menu, you’ll have a bite of Thai one minute and then a bite of East Indian the next. It’s a little confusing the the palate.

Food is good and bar drinks are creative, but it still have a slight hint of generic Cheesecake Factory taste to it.

Service was attentive and capable- good even. And their uniforms aren’t that ridiculous, almost painful white of the Cheesecake Factory.

Dessert- you must have dessert! Easily the high point of the meal was the Creme Brulee Banana Cake with Milk Chocolate Ice Cream. It was absolutely amazing. And the coffee is surprisingly great too!

Prices are a little bit higher than the Cheesecake Factory, but still within the realm of reasonable. If you’re in the neighborhood, give Rock Sugar a try!
