We all know the best way to ward off the sun’s harmful rays is to cover up with sunblock, but sometimes even the wisest of us can forget to slather on the sunscreen before heading out. So, you’ve wound up with a sunburn, now what? Here are a few tried and true techniques to soothe your skin and help you heal.

Try popping pills. The easiest way to dull the pain is to pop a few ibuprofen and guzzle lots of water. In general, try nursing your sunburn the way you would a hangover.

When I was growing up we had a huge aloe plant in our house, we’d cut off pieces to soothe burns. It’s the ultimate fast acting way to take away the sting of your sunburn. It goes on cold and absorbs the heat from your burn. It also provides great moisturizing qualities, all of which you’ll need to recover.

A great at home remedy is to draw yourself a cold bath. That’s right, fill up the tub with cold water and sink yourself in. You’ll feel instant relief. The cold water will keep your body temp from skyrocketing and keep swelling to a minimum. Make sure you stay away from soap or body cleansing gels for this soak, the ingredients will only further irritate your skin.

*In the case that your burn develops painful blisters, makes you feel faint or dizzy and you have difficulty breathing, feel clammy and nauseated, or you have a fever and the chills, head straight to the doctor. You could have sun poisoning.

These tips will help patch you up for a quick recovery and you’ll be back to the beach in no time.
