They’re Gonna Zap Your Greens

We’re entering “Spinach- the Radiation Years”.
I know what you’re thinking. The only thing missing from that tasty bowl of spinach greens is just a dash of radiation. Well, it looks like all your dreams are about to come true.
In an effort to save us all from the dirty, nasty E Coli bug, the Associated Press reports that the FDA has just approved zapping fresh spinach and iceberg lettuce with enough radiation to kill the little beasts that cause food poisoning.
The FDA says that this move towards radiation will no only kill the E Coli bugs, but will also increase the shelf life of produce. Dr. Laura Tarantino, director of the FDA’s Office of Food Additive Safety promises: “There is no residue, there’s nothing left and certainly no radioactivity left.”
Is the produce now going to glow? Do we have to pay more for glowing spinach? What would Popeye think of all this?
So many unanswered questions.
