Some times comedy can push those politically incorrect buttons and the Dreamworks’ Tropic Thunder is no exception.  The film’s  writer/director/star Ben Stiller’s portrayal of a mentally handicapped man has provoked anger and cries afoul from disability groups.

The character he plays, simply named Speedman, is an action movie star who has seen better days.  In effort to regain some credibility, he agrees to take on the role of “Simple Jack,” who is referred to in marketing material as a “retard”.

The description and portrayal prompted a number of organizations to protest to bosses at studio DreamWorks - who have now agreed to meet in person with representatives of the disability groups.

Anne Sommers, from the American Association of People with Disabilities, tells the New York Times, “We want to be really plain about what our issues are with the movie.”

In its defense, DreamWorks executives insist the movie intends to spoof the ridiculous film industry and not disabled people.

Hmmmm…. We’re expecting a similar reaction from Playboy playmates after seeing the equally controversial The House Bunny, coming out in a few weeks.

Tropic Thunder, on the other hand, which incidentally co-stars Jack Black and Robert Downey Jr., will be released on August 13th.
