What is Slow Food?

Have you heard of the Slow Food trend? Well, here’s the skinny-
Slow Food is essentially the opposite of the fast food epidemic. Slow food is about the taste and pleasure of food, and the choices you make in eating that food. It’s the opposite of stopping off for a drive through burger and scarfing it down while battling rush hour traffic.
Slow food is about recognizing the fact that our food often travels great distances to get to us. It’s about shortening the distance that food travels from the ground to our tables. The idea behind Slow Food is to shop locally and eating seasonally. It’s about a better connection between the farm, the market and your table.
I know, I’m sounding a little hippie right now, but slow food has real benefits to our planet. By created a closer connection between the farm and our kitchens we can cut back on the tremendous amount of energy it takes to get, for example, fruit up to the United States from Chile when certain fruits are out of season in the Northern Hemisphere.
But the best part of the Slow Food movement is that there are no rules. You can take exactly what you want from it. Maybe to you, slow food is simply lingering over a glass of fresh squeezed orange juice, or picking lemons with your neighbor in her backyard instead of buying them at the grocery store. It’s up to you!
It’s simple, next time you enjoy that ultra juicy peach, just take a moment to think about where that peach came from. There you are- a part of the slow food movement just like that!
